Louder Is Not Always Clearer - Mr & Mrs Clark

In een horende wereld is Jonny anders en Louder is not always clearer is een moedige expositie die de verschillen aanstipt. Voor een horend publiek is het een verlichtend en emotionele ervaring. Voor een doof publiek is de voorstelling een herkenbaar verhaal van onbegrip en isolatie. Voor al het publiek is het een humorvol en soms emotioneel verhaal van een man die probeert zijn weg te vinden, erbij te horen en geaccepteerd te worden. Ontmoet Jonny Jonny is leraar, freelancer, workshopleider en een voetbal fan met passie. Hij is net vader geworden, hij voert campagne en is een artiest. Zijn vrienden zeggen dat hij uitbundig en populair is en dat hij van muziek, festival en nachtclub houdt. Jonny is doof. Hij is doof geboren met horende ouders die bang waren dat zijn beperking hem en de familie zou stigmatiseren. Het woord ‘doof’ kwam niet voor in het Cotsen huishouden. Jonny kreeg zware spraak therapie en leerde liplezen. Hij is zich pas op latere leeftijd als ‘doof’ gaan identificeren. Van jongs af aan voelde hij zich niet verbonden met zijn beperking, maar ook niet met de wereld om zich heen. This one-man show is an honest portrayal of the vulnerability of a man perceived to be full of confidence and outwardly social. In a hearing world Jonny is different and Louder Is Not Always Clearer is a bold expose that highlights those differences. For a hearing audience it is an illuminating and emotional experience. For deaf audience members the show is a familiar tale of misunderstanding and isolation. For all audiences it is a humorous and at times moving story of one man’s attempt to cope, to fit in and be accepted. Meet Jonny Jonny is a teacher, a freelance facilitator, a workshop leader and an avid football fan. He’s just become a father, he is a campaigner and an artist. His friends say that he’s outgoing and popular and that he loves music, festivals and nightclubs. Jonny is deaf. He was born deaf to hearing parents who were afraid that disability would stigmatise their son and the family. Deaf was a term not used in the Cotsen household. Jonny underwent ardent speech therapy and learnt to lip read. He did not identify himself as ‘deaf’ until much later in life. From an early age he felt disconnected from his disability but also disconnected from the world around him.
